Let me ask you, how do you rate yourself as a leader? On a scale of 1-10, with anything over five as above average, how do you rate your leadership skills?
I would put money on the fact that most people answering this question would consider themselves above average. Which of course is statistically impossible. But herein lies the problem. If you believe you are better than average, then where's the motivation to be better?
In the business world, leaders are accountable for performance. In other words, delivering and growing the bottom line. Fail to do that and chances are you're out right? So we can assume, as long as you're achieving the numbers, you must be doing a good job.
But lets redefine leadership as 'the art of motivating a group of people to act toward achieving a common goal', then let me ask the question again but slightly differently,
"How do you rate your ability to create authentic connections and genuine engagement, that inspires ownership of goals and unwavering action?"
Chances are you will have to think deeper about your answer to this one. Do you even really know?
No doubt you share some of the following leadership qualities; action oriented, results driven, ambitious, determined, confident, self-reliant, competitive... and no doubt these qualities have been the very drivers of your career success to date.
The problem is, as a leader, they're no longer enough. Not if you want to motivate and inspire a diverse personality base to action. Often it is these very qualities that can also become your Achilles heel when the pressure goes on. Instead of motivating and rallying support from the troops, instead you end up alienating people and decreasing engagement.
The impact is devastating. To your leadership reputation and to the people you are leading.
How many bosses have you worked for that you can truly say were exceptional leaders? I personally can count the number on one hand. That's a distressing ratio given I've been in the workforce for 25 years.
No doubt the qualities you admire will be different to mine. And that's okay. But that's the trick, knowing that different personalities have different sets of what I call emotional currency that drives engagement. Especially for people who don't share an abundance of the leadership qualities acknowledged above. And chances are, that will be the majority of the people in your charge. The reality is, the qualities highlighted above are only shared by approximately one quarter of the workforce.

It is claimed that around 90% of all decisions are based on subconscious emotional drivers. That we merely use logic to rationalise our decisions. Fascinating then that we are so reliant on data to determine our pathways of action right?
So if emotion plays such a big part of people's decision making process, surely it is in our interest as leaders and businesses to understand the different emotional triggers or what I call emotional currency that ultimately influences behaviour - be that of employees, customers, spouses, partners, even your children.
I have always had an interest in behavioural science which I believe has been driven by my own experience navigating my childhood and subsequent life, having lost my right hand as a young child. This interest intensified when Shopper Marketing became a recognised discipline because without emotional value, products are fully reliant on features and price.
The better we understand what customers value at a subconscious, emotional level, the less of a role price plays in the decision making process. The same logic applies to leadership. The better you understand your personal emotional drivers and how they differ from others, the better you will be at influencing outcomes, driving engagement, connection and collaboration.
When you're able to see another person's perspective, you can better predict the effect your words will have on them. Knowing your communication style, as well as that of your team, is one of the qualities that will strengthen your leadership the most.
